  Productive Ageing

In Australia the number of grandparent led families has risen from 12,000 in 1997 to 22,500 in 2005. The following factors are seen as the main causes driving the increase in grandparent led families: parental substance abuse, teen pregnancy, AIDS, unemployment and incarceration. Foster parents receive financial assistance to cover the basic costs of child raising. Grandparents in the similar care roles do not usually automatically receive financial assistance.
